About Baisakhi (Vaishakhi)

Baisakhi marks the solar new year and the beginning of the harvest season in Punjab and Haryana. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa Panth on Baisakhi at Anandpur Sahib, making it a highly significant day for Sikhs. For farmers, it marks the culmination of their rabi (winter) harvest labor.

🎉 Traditions & Customs

Farmers harvest the wheat fields and celebrate with bhangra and giddha dances. Processions (jatha) are taken out to Gurudwaras. Langar (community meals) are served at Gurudwaras. New clothes are worn and family feasts are organized. Melas (fairs) are held near Gurudwaras and temples.

🌾 In Haryana & Mundakhera

Haryana is the breadbasket of India — Baisakhi is when the golden wheat fields are finally harvested. In Jhajjar district, the melas at Gurugram's Sheetla Mata temple and local Gurudwaras are very popular. Farmers thank the land and celebrate with dhol-beats. Golden mustard and wheat fields turning into harvested land is the iconic visual of this festival.

🌙 Panchang Notes

Solar event — sun enters Aries (Mesh Sankranti). Always on April 13 or 14.
