About Gugga Navami

Gugga Navami honors Gugga Veer (also called Zaharveer Gugga), a 12th century folk deity from Rajasthan who is revered as a snake deity and protector. He is worshipped primarily in Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Legend says Gugga could control serpents and cure snake bites.

🎉 Traditions & Customs

People carry elaborate decorated palanquins (jhanki) of Gugga through the village. Processions with dhol and nagaras happen. Snake motifs are painted on walls and entrances. Offerings of milk and sweets are placed at snake anthills (vaalmik). Folk performers (sappere) demonstrate snake charming. Women make colorful designs at the entrance of homes.

🌾 In Haryana & Mundakhera

Gugga Navami is uniquely Haryanvi and Punjabi — rarely celebrated with this intensity elsewhere in India. In Mundakhera region, processions go through the village with the akhara (group) singing gugga-geet (folk ballads about Gugga). The Badshahi Pirs (Muslim counterparts of Gugga — called Mazars) are also visited by Muslim villagers, showing Hindu-Muslim unity.

🌙 Panchang Notes

Bhadrapada Krishna Navami — the 9th day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadra month.
