Holi is the festival of colors celebrating the arrival of spring and the triumph of devotee Prahlad over the demoness Holika. It also commemorates the divine love of Radha and Krishna. The festival heralds the end of winter and the blossoming of nature.
🎉 Traditions & Customs
Holika Dahan (bonfire) is lit the night before, burning evil and negativity. Next day, people smear each other with gulal (colored powder) and drench with water. Thandai (a special milk drink, sometimes with bhaang) is prepared. Gujiya (sweet dumplings) and dahi-bhalle are traditional treats.
🌾 In Haryana & Mundakhera
Haryana celebrates Holi with tremendous energy. In villages like Mundakhera, Holika Dahan is a community event with everyone gathering at the main chowk. The next day, men play holi on the streets while women celebrate at home or in separate groups. Haryanvi folk songs (folk-geet) are sung. Latth-maar Holi style (playful stick holi) is popular in some nearby villages.
