Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, at midnight on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami. Krishna was born in Mathura (close to Haryana) to free the world from the tyranny of his maternal uncle, King Kansa. The festival is especially significant in the Braj region.
🎉 Traditions & Customs
Fasting is observed until midnight when Krishna's birth is celebrated. Temples are beautifully decorated and Krishna's idol is given a ritual bath (abhishek). Dahi Handi (breaking a pot of curd tied at height) is a popular celebration. Jhulans (swings) are set up for Krishna idols. Mathura and Vrindavan-style celebrations with folk music.
🌾 In Haryana & Mundakhera
Being close to Braj region (Mathura is ~150 km), Haryana villages celebrate Janmashtami with great devotion. All-night kirtan sessions happen in temples. Children dress as Krishna and Radha. Jhajjar district celebrates with processions and bhajan competitions.
