Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond of love and protection between siblings. Sisters tie a sacred thread (rakhi) on their brothers' wrists, and brothers vow to protect them. The festival has roots in ancient traditions and is now celebrated across India with great sentiment.
🎉 Traditions & Customs
Sisters perform aarti of their brothers, apply tilak, and tie the rakhi. Brothers give gifts or money (shagun). Special sweets like kheer and mithai are prepared. In earlier times, women sent rakhi to kings or soldiers seeking protection. New clothes are worn.
🌾 In Haryana & Mundakhera
Raksha Bandhan is deeply emotional in Haryana. Sisters who are married often travel back to their parental home (maike) for this occasion. The Haryanvi tradition of bhai-dooj and Rakshabandhan together are considered family reunion festivals. Brothers' gifts (called nag) often include sarees or jewelry for married sisters.
