Old Wells (Kuen) of Mundakhera

Water Heritage — The Ancient Wells

Before the arrival of hand pumps (in the 1970s) and piped water supply (Jal Jeevan Mission, 2022), the kuen (well) was the lifeline of Mundakhera. Several old wells still exist in the village, though most are no longer in active use.

Notable Wells

• The Temple Well (Mandir ka Kuen) — Adjacent to the Gorakhnath Mandir, this is the oldest well in the village, believed to be over 200 years old. Its water was considered sacred and used for puja rituals.
• The Eastern Quarter Well (Poorab Mohalle ka Kuen) — Served the eastern families of the village for generations. The surrounding stone platform is still intact.
• The Farming Well (Khet ka Kuen) — Located in the main agricultural field area, once used for irrigation via a Persian wheel (rahat) pulled by bullocks.

Cultural Memory

The well was not just a water source — it was a social hub. Women gathered at the well every morning to fill their gharas (clay pots), exchanging news and stories. Young boys learned to swim in the wider community wells. Marriage ceremonies traditionally featured the ritual of drawing well water (ghara bharna).

Conservation Call

The Gram Panchayat has identified the Temple Well for heritage conservation. With proper protection, these wells could serve as groundwater recharge structures and living monuments of Mundakhera's water heritage.
